In the fast lane with innovative chemistry

When the chemistry is right, electric cars can pick up speed fast. New, innovative materials and functional components will facilitate safe, efficient and affordable electromobility.

Electromobility solutions

Electromobility will play a major role in future mobility, especially in congested urban areas. It’s the battery that defines some of the essential properties of an electric vehicle. In addition, plastic materials for lightweight design, insulating materials and IR-reflective coatings for improved heat management contribute significantly to sustainable electromobility. BASF offers a wide range of solutions in these fields today.

  • Innovative materials enhance the performance of lithium-based batteries.
  • Lightweight components reduce the weight of vehicles extending their range.
  • Solutions for better heat management reduce energy consumption.

Cooperation with partners

At BASF we strive to resolve fundamental issues together with our partners in order to reduce the time to market for battery products.

  • Innovation alliance HE-Lion (High Energy Lithium Ion Battery)
  • Electrochemistry and Batteries Research Network
  • Joint laboratory with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)
  • Cooperation with Sion Power of Tucson, Arizona

In the field of electromobility BASF Future Business has a crucial role to play as an interface, ensuring liaison among various groups within BASF and with external partners.

Technologies for next generation batteries

BASF has a research focus in developing and enhancing materials for next generation lithium ion batteries and innovative battery concepts based on what is known as post-lithium ion technologies, such as lithium sulfur or lithium air. These new technologies promise significantly higher energy densities – and the potential to bring down the weight and cost of batteries considerably.

When high-performance materials and concepts put electromobility in the fast lane, it’s because at BASF, we create chemistry.
